David H McConnell was the founder of Avon. He created a fragrance. Giving away the fragrance added to a sales pitch. His customers wanted free gifts of fragrance Not the books he sold.

A New York office in 1886, he started a line of fragrances from The California Perfume Company. In 1928, the name changed to Avon. Named after Shakespeare of Stratford-on-Avon.

Door-to-door sales ideal for the time period. McConnell traveled to states and small towns. Clients were stuck-at-home. Unable to shop for beauty products. Ultimately leading to much success for the company.

The first female sales representative caused a dramatic change. Persis Foster Earners Albee distributed products.

She was age 50 and began to hire women to market his products. She trained female salespeople, and the Avon Lady was born!
